About Us

At Wafelbakker Anderson Orthodontics, we’re not just straightening teeth. We’re changing lives by offering a conservative approach to full-mouth reconstruction. We are known for creating “the Wafelbakker smile,” a term coined by patients in the Gilroy office.

About Wafelbakker Anderson Orthodontics

At Wafelbakker Anderson Orthodontics, patients can expect a fun and family-friendly environment that is both warm and welcoming. As most of our patients are children and teenagers—though we treat adults as well—we pride ourselves on providing upbeat office environments that take the stress out of orthodontics.

We treat our patients—as well as our staff members at each of our four offices in Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Hollister and Walnut Creek—like family. For us, orthodontics is more than straight teeth and a pretty smile. It’s about building relationships in the community, giving back and providing overall oral health for life.

Our Aesthetics

Our patients come to us for what has been called “the Wafelbakker smile”—a term coined by patients in our Gilroy office. We accomplish this aesthetically pleasing smile through a three-point process: by not pulling teeth; by ensuring that the smile features a full display of the upper teeth; and by creating a smile arc along the edges of the top teeth that follows the curve of the lower lip. The result is a wide, beautiful and youthful smile.

Our Philosophy

We also go beyond the traditional scope of orthodontic care by taking a comprehensive approach to oral health. That’s because a proper bite and well-aligned jaws are integral to a patient’s overall health and general wellbeing at every stage of life. In addition to years of study and extensive continuing education training, we are constantly learning and using the most advanced, cutting-edge techniques. In fact, we employ one of the most unique treatment modalities in the world called Multiloop Edgewise Archwire (MEAW) for the treatment of severe malocclusions (such as open bites or anterior cross bites).

This conservative approach to orthodontic care is patient-specific and allows for rearrangement within the dental frame—all without the need for jaw surgery or the extraction of permanent teeth. “Where Teeth Work the Best, They Look the Best!”

Our Approach

Using the Multiloop Edgewise Archwire (MEAW) modality is so successful that we are able to correct misalignments in 90 percent of patients who would otherwise require jaw surgery. These wires are an incredibly powerful tool that completely changed our practice, allowing us to correct even the most difficult bites and overly crowded situations. We continued to learn more and received additional training on the functional side of how a patient’s bite affects the supporting bones, gums, and head and neck muscles. As two of only a few orthodontists in the United States offering MEAW, we have become experts in the field. By combining MEAW with SureSmile wires (robotically bent archwires that allow for highly detailed computer assisted final positioning of a patient’s teeth), we have developed a completely unique treatment approach that allows us to correct the most difficult orthodontic problems. Typically, patients see incredible results within 18 months. Also, by improving overall function with properly aligned teeth and jaws, we ensure that patients have a minimized need for future dental work. At Wafelbakker Anderson Orthodontics, we strive to inspire confidence in our patients by giving them straight teeth, a killer smile and a healthy, balanced bite that will last a lifetime.

Meet The Team

Dr. Wafelbakker

Dr. Bas Wafelbakker, DMD

Since 1985, Dr. Wafelbakker has been providing his patients with top quality orthodontic care. He chose the oral health field because his grandfather was a dentist and he enjoyed the mix of using his mind, his hands, and socializing all at the same time. At the office, Dr. Wafelbakker loves making people smile. His practice is a friendly and warm place, where both staff and patients have a lot of fun. Interacting with patients is one of his favorite aspects of his job, and seeing patients coming from up to a third generation, can be a very gratifying experience. Dr. Wafelbakker feels like his patients are like family and treats them with the utmost care.

In addition, Dr. Wafelbakker spends many hours a year on continuing education in both the US and abroad. He believes that orthodontics and dentistry are rapidly evolving and changing professions, and it takes a lot of continuing education to stay on the cutting edge. Dr. Wafelbakker believes it is important to not only take continuing education courses in orthodontics, but also in many other dental disciplines. This allows him to communicate better with his patients’ general dentists, and to provide his patients with better care.

Since 2008, Dr. Wafelbakker has been actively studying with a Japanese orthodontist (Dean of Kawanaga Dental College in Japan). Through this studying, Dr. Wafelbakker has learned a technique that eliminates jaw surgery for a lot of patients that would otherwise have needed surgery to fix their bite.
